BIOGRAPHY
Hi, my name is Balazs Kovacs.
I am a photographer, filmmaker and producer based in Austria. My specialty is sports, sports fashion and landscape photography. I have always been passionate about photography and movie production, especially involving sports and nature. It was purely my hobby until I began to get lots of requests to take photos and make short movies for local and international clients. Since then, I have completed many interesting projects varying hugely in scale and budget. I'm comfortable and enjoy the challenges presented with the variety of my role; as a single day solo camera operator with 1 or 2 assistants, as a producer working together with large team on a brand campaign, or as a one person media machine.
When I am not taking pictures, I enjoy snowboarding with friends, most of the time I
have my camera tucked away in my bag to capture the fun times though.
Photography and snowboarding took me new places and introduced me to precious
people I can call real friends. I can't wait for the next adventure!
"Feel the light" - photography is simply magic for me. Freeze the moments so that they live forever, capturing magical moments and transporting you back to those times. That is my biggest passion together with snowboarding and filmmaking. My goal is to create photos that inspire others to start the sport, start photography or both. My job is often to create a photo that sells the product, whether that's clothing, an activity or a location. Tip: shoot with pro athletes or professional models :)
About the Shot
My friends and I are passionate snowboarders. We love to go out and ride almost every day, usually 150 - 200 days every year. They're lucky enough to ride with a photographer (like me) who loves to create and is keen on capturing magical moments. Most of the time I ride with my camera gear in my backpack, especially those days when the weather forecast promises fresh snow and blue skies!
It was one of those days with Peter Bauer and a few friends on Kitzsteinhorn Glacier in Austria. The rule
is, first lift up! Trying to be first on virgin snowfields.
Peter is a very experienced snowboarder, multiple World and European champion, and very comfortable in front of the camera. He was one of the first professional snowboarders, and a pioneer of the snowboard world. He knows how to ride fast, make very powerful turns and get a huge snow spray.
The way we shoot is always the same: safety first, choose the mountain face, plan the action. Then I go and find the perfect position, signal as soon as I am ready, rider signals before they start, and then - action! I remember Peter rode straight for a few hundred meters to make sure he had maximum speed
for this one turn.
And here is the result. We are both very happy with this photo.
